  1. A design or picture, usually for a floor or
  2. wall, produced by inlaying small pieces of
  3. marble, glass, or other materials. Mosaic was
  4. commonly used by the Romans for their villas
  5. (for example Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli) and
  6. by the Byzantines. The art was revived by the
  7. Italians during the 13th century, when it was
  8. used chiefly for the decoration of churches
  9. (for example San Vitale, Ravenna). More
  10. recent examples of mosaic work can be seen in
  11. the hall of the Houses of Parliament and in
  12. Westminster Cathedral, London.
